Instituto Health Science Career Academy along with Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has set ambitious goals to ensure that every child—in every school and every neighborhood—has access to a world-class learning experience from birth, resulting in graduation from high school college- and career-ready. In alignment with CPS/ISBE, our school strives to provide high-quality and specially designed instructional supports and services for all students with disabilities within the least restrictive environment. We work collaboratively with the goal of improving the academic achievement of all students with disabilities by ensuring they receive meaningful and relevant access to grade-level core instruction within their school.

The Librarian reports to the Principal or designee and collaborates with teachers and other educators to strengthen the connections between student research needs, curricular content, learning outcomes, and available information resources. The Librarian's role is to empower students to become critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skilled researchers, and ethical users of information. Additionally, the Librarian fosters a school-wide culture of curiosity among both students and staff by providing a diverse range of innovative resources and programs within the Instituto Health and Sciences Career Academy and Instituto Justice and Leadership Academy campuses.

 

The Paraprofessional reports to the Principal and works with the Case Managers and Special Education Teachers to provide supplementary services to students. Under the direction of a teacher, the Paraprofessional assists teacher in providing a positive classroom experience by providing behavioral management, assisting with students’ personal care needs (mobility, bathroom, etc.), providing supervision on field trips and class activities, and helping to facilitate communication with students with special needs who are also English language learners.
The Safety & Security Officer responds to emergencies, intervenes in interpersonal conflicts, and directs students and staff in crisis situations. Safety & Security Monitors will help provide a safe learning environment for our students, educators, staff and guests. Assist and support with student behavior management and helping students that require additional guidance. Safety & Security Officers supervise students and guests during arrivals, visitations, class transition, lunch, and in-school/after school activities as well as monitor all three buildings and parking lots.
The School Nurse oversees the school health program for the Instituto Health and Sciences Career Academy and Instituto Justice and Leadership Academy campuses, coordinating the delivery of health services to students and acting as a health resource for staff to promote overall wellness in the school community. The nurse’s duties are to be carried out in accordance with professional school nurse practice standards, State Board of Education policies, and the State of Illinois Nurse Practice Act.

The Instituto Health Sciences Career Academy (IHSCA) school Social Worker reports directly to the principal or designee and plays a vital role in bridging the gap between school, home, and the community. Their primary focus is coordinating efforts to support students' academic achievement and social, emotional, and behavioral growth. Utilizing a holistic approach that considers the student in the context of their environment, school Social Workers work to ensure equitable access to education, foster students' mental, physical, and emotional well-being, and promote respect and dignity for all.

 

The school Social Worker is responsible for the educational, psychological, and social development of students in their assigned caseload. They provide ongoing progress tracking, assessment, and support, while also collaborating with school staff, families, and external resources. In addition to their primary responsibilities, they perform duties related to general and special education services, including evaluations, staffing, and mandated counseling. These tasks are carried out in coordination with educational, psychological, and health professionals to ensure comprehensive student support.

The special education teacher provides appropriate, effective, and culturally relevant instruction to grades 9-12 that meets both SAT and College Readiness standards as well as Common Core standards, while ensuring a safe environment that supports student’s social-emotional growth and individualized education plan (IEP).
