Our Schools’ Union Negotiations Update

Dear IHSCA Families,

We would like to provide an update on our contract talks with the teacher’s union. Negotiations have been progressing, with the schools presenting comprehensive and fair proposals to the union. Some teachers expressed displeasure with the most recent compensation proposal, which has led to a few rallies from the educators. During the rallies, chants of “if we don’t get it, shut it down” has been shouted, which has caused unnecessary confusion.  To be clear, we would like to address and dispel any false rumors circulating that suggest IHSCA will be closing its doors as a school. Furthermore, closing the school is not in the best interest of our students and our families and we are dedicated to maintaining our active role in the community for many years to come.

In the latest compensation proposal, our schools have proposed to pay our teachers 92% to 99% over a four-year period of what CPS teachers are paid as our teachers receive more preparation time and have a lower instructional minutes requirement than CPS teachers. To add context, the union has sought for members to be paid 102% to 111% over a four-year period of what CPS teachers are paid. Without CPS-level funding and without CPS-level working hours, we do not believe salary above CPS teachers is a good faith demand.

We want to assure everyone that our schools are committed to negotiating in good faith, striving for a contract that is fair to all parties involved, and ultimately serves the best interests of our students. While progress has been made, the union has voted yes to a strike authorization. At this time, the union has not opted to proceed with a strike.

However, in the event of a strike happening, our schools are well prepared to minimize disruption:

  • IHSCA will remain open for our students.
  • A safe space is provided, supervised by administrative teams or replacement teachers.
  • Breakfast and lunch will be available.
  • Regular business hours continue.
  • Access to Instituto buildings for regular purposes remains unobstructed.

Once again, our goal is a fair agreement for all parties involved. We'll keep you informed on further updates. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to our school leadership team with any questions. Thanks for your understanding and continued support.
